How to make Matar ka Halwa -

Green peas and the shells finely chopped, sautéed in ghee and cooked with sugar, gram flour and dry fruits to make a rich and delicious halwa. The emerald green colour and rich taste makes it perfect for the Diwali festivities.

 

You might be picking out these emerald hued little jewels from your food. But, wait, before you do that anymore! As these are a good source of fibre and potassium, which keeps all of our body cells functioning properly. Just when you thought that green peas are only used to add that extra punch to your savoury dishes, try a rich, creamy matar ki kheer to satiate your sweet buds too!

Ingredients

  • Fresh Green Peas boiled and coarsely ground 1 cup

  • Tender Green Pea Shells 7-8

  • Sugar 1 cup

  • Ghee 1 tablespoon

  • Almonds finely chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Cashewnuts finely chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Pistachios finely chopped 1 tablespoon

  • Gram flour (besan) 2 tablespoon

  • Green cardamom powder 1/2 teaspoon

  • khoya / mawa grated 1/2 cup


Method

Step 1

Cook sugar and 1 cup water in a non-stick pan to make sugar syrup.

Step 2

Remove strings of the pea shells, roughly chop and add to the sugar syrup.

Step 3

Heat ghee in another non-stick pan. Add almonds, cashewnuts and pistachios and sauté for 1-2 minutes.

Step 4

Add gram flour and sauté for 1-1½ minutes. Add green peas and sauté on low heat for 4-5 minutes.

Step 5

Add green cardamom powder and mix well.

Step 6

Add khoya and sauté for 1-2 minutes. Add sugar syrup along with the shells and mix well. Cook for 3-4 minutes and switch off the heat.

Step 7

Transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot.
